Our all soloing, all tapping, riff crunching, large shouldered Postman Pat lookalike on the Gibson Les Paul. Nick originally formed the band when working as a part time barman in Nunthorpe squash club in order to feed the ‘old ball and chain’ (His words not mine!!) and kids – ok that’s a slight exaggeration, more like to fund his addiction to fast cars and guitars. Here is a man who at 21 is driving a BMW Z4 M coupe with a personalised number plate. The constant warnings of his concerned band mates regarding his carbon footprint all fall on deaf ears – despicable.
When Nick was searching for someone to play behind him while he soloed constantly/played the intro to ‘Sweet Child O Mine’ (Some things never change), he approached Anthony – then working as a 15 year old glass collector – and the seeds of Last Anthem were sown.
Nick yields to no man his love of classic British/American rock. Dire Straits, AC/DC, Guns N Roses, Def Leppard, Thin Lizzy, Eric Clapton and co are all major influences. The fact that anything post 1994 does not exist in Nick’s world is a constant source of frustration to his long suffering band mates – ‘Ocean Colour Scene? Blur? Never bloody heard of them’ and ‘The Killers? What kind of a bloody name is that? Never bloody heard of them’ being famous Coggon quotes, prompting jaws dropping all around Last Anthem HQ during practice sessions.
However, when it comes to his role in Last Anthem, no one is more serious about learning new material note for note and moving things forward. Nick is the man who will turn up for practice five minutes early ready to go week after week in order to perform as well as he possibly can, and is totally focused on taking his guitar playing to new heights as he constantly strives for improvement and mastery of his instrument.
