"Here comes guitar George – he knows all the chords, but he doesn’t want to make it cry or sing" so says the immortal line in Dire Straits monster hit Sultans of Swing. Rumour has it Mark Knopfler actually wrote this line with our very own chord maestro in mind – not many people have heard this rumour (the total number is somewhere in the region of three to five), but hey it’s a rumour all the same.
Scott was working alongside Nick as a part time bartender many moons ago in Nunthorpe Squash Club when Nick decided that along with wanting drums to back him up as he endlessly played the intro to ‘Sweet Child O Mine’ (See Anthony’s profile for more on this….), he also wanted someone to fool around on a bass guitar – albeit at very low levels to not distract from his silly high note fumbling.
Now it’s a well known Last Anthem fact that Mr Chapman LOVES to get his hands on a bass as often as is humanly possible – just watch him at the start of a gig, when the other band members will take bets on how long it is before he picks up Bails’ bass and starts playing the intro to the Kings Of Leon classic ‘On Call’. However try as he may he simply couldn’t fulfil the requirements of the low end and had to make the call of his life to Bails to come to the rescue and take care of business!
Never one to be concerned with the silly twiddlings of the lead guitar, Scott’s focus is always on the overall sound of the band. Weather it be playing a complex chord progression or strumming away at a classic three chord trick, Scott will do as much or little as the song requires. Add to this his ultra baritone style (or falsetto when he can be bothered at all – take note Chappers!) backing vocals and you have an extremely important team player indeed. Some would say invaluable, but we wouldn’t mention that to him – he already seems to think he’s the most handsome member of the band, much to the other chaps frank disbelief.
